Cooking Up Memories: The Stuttgart American High School Alumni Cookbook

The Stuttgart American High School (SAHS) was a DODDS school located in Stuttgart, Germany from 1953 to 1992. Its alumni, proud military brats and third culture kids, share a unique bond, shaped by a global upbringing and the experience of growing up in a tight-knit overseas community. Though the school closed its doors decades ago, the spirit of SAHS lives on. Today, the alumni association spans four decades and gathers every three years in cities across the U.S. to reconnect and reminisce.

The Inspiration Behind the Cookbook:
It all started with a simple Facebook post. Anthony, one of the alumni, frequently shared photos of what he was cooking, and soon, other alumni were chiming in with their own recipes, stories, and cravings from childhood. It quickly became clear: food was more than just a shared interest. It was a way to stay connected, to relive memories, and to celebrate the diversity that defined their unique high school experience. That spark grew into the idea of a collaborative cookbook, where each recipe told a personal story and helped bring the SAHS community back together. This time, through flavor.

A Cookbook Full of Culture and Connection:
As recipes rolled in, the team was struck by just how much history and heart each submission carried. Many dishes were passed down through generations, while others reflected the cultural influences alumni picked up during their time abroad. From German classics to Asian-inspired comfort foods, the cookbook became a delicious showcase of the global backgrounds and lived experiences of military kids who grew up far from “home.”

More Than a Cookbook – A Fundraiser and Reunion Favorite:
The cookbook has served as more than just a nostalgic project, it’s also a meaningful fundraiser to help cover reunion costs. With each event taking place in a new U.S. city, the cookbooks support planning, and event coordination so the community can keep coming together. And the first edition was such a hit that a second one followed shortly after, giving those who missed the first round a chance to be part of something special.
